Stakes is the longest and most demanding leg
of the Triple Crown Series.
The third jewel in the Triple Crown, the

141 Belmont Stakes Winner 2009
Jockey Kent Desormeaux, who finished second twice before at the Belmont Stakes, wins the 2009 Belmont Stakes riding Summer Bird. The other bird, Mine That Bird, hung back for most of the race and then made an early move — maybe a bit too early — to push for the lead but ended up taking third place and still in the money. Dunkirk finished in second place.
"He was fighting it just a little bit, " jockey Calvin Borel said on Mine That Bird. "I didn't want to fight him too much."
Summer Bird, the 11/1 odds to win the 2009 Belmont Stakes, becomes the surprise winner of the Belmont Stakes and denies jockey Calvin Borel his own 'Triple Crown.'
"I had an armchair ride until I found some room. said winning jockey Kent Desormeaux "Well, I found some room."
Bred by owners Kalarikkal and Vilasini Jayaraman out of the mare Hong Kong Squall and a daughter of 1990 Preakness winner Summer Squall, Summer Bird has raced only four times in his entire career.
140th Belmont Stakes Winner 2008
Da'Tara wins Belmont to deny Big Brown Triple Crown
Da' Tara won the Belmont Stakes, spoiling favorite Big Brown's bid to become the first winner of horse racing's Triple Crown in 30 years.
Da' Tara, ridden by Alan Garcia, went wire-to-wire and won by 5 1/2 lengths in 2:29.65 with Denis of Cork second. There was a dead heat for third between Anak Nakal and Ready's Echo.
Big Brown didn't respond at the urging of jockey Kent Desormeaux in the final turn and was pulled up. The previously undefeated colt finished last in the 140th running of the 1 1/2- mile race, the longest of the Triple Crown events.
139th Belmont Stakes Visa triple
crown winner 2007
More than seven years after he competed in his first Kentucky Derby with Trippi, More Than Ready and Impeachment in May of 2000, perennial champion trainer Todd Pletcher finally got his first Triple Crown victory, ending a much publicized and often-talked-about 0-for-28 record in the classics. And he did it with a filly!Michael Tabor’s and Derrick Smith’s Rags to Riches certainly became the newest queen of racing after she out-gamed the big, muscular and flat-out imposing Preakness champion Curlin to the wire in Saturday’s 139th Belmont Stakes. At 6:32 p.m. yesterday, Rags to Riches had become just the third filly in history to win the Belmont Stakes, and the first to accomplish the feat since Tanya in 1905. And, she paid $10.60 for every $2 win ticket among the feminists in the crowd of 46,870.
