Federer Claims Fifth US Open Title
Roger Federer answered suggestions he couldn't win another tennis Grand Slam by collecting a fifth straight U.S. Open, leaving him within one title of matching Pete Sampras's record haul of 14 majors.
Federer lay prone on the court with his face buried in his hands after beating Britain's Andy Murray 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 at the National Tennis Center in New York yesterday.
"I felt like I was invincible for a while again,'' the champion, with the trophy by his side, told reporters.
Serena wins third US Open
Displaying the talent and tenacity that helped her dominate tennis earlier in the decade, Serena Williams outlasted Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 7-5 for her third U.S. Open championship and ninth Grand Slam title.
After flinging her racket straight up and hopping, skipping and screaming for joy, the fourth-seeded Williams met second-ranked Jankovic at the net and felt compelled to say, "I'm sorry I got so excited.''
It was Williams' first triumph at Flushing Meadows since 2002, and it guaranteed that the American will lead the WTA rankings on Monday for the first time since August 2003, the longest gap between stints at No. 1 for a woman.
Her previous Grand Slam title came in January 2007, at the Australian Open.

Angel Cabrera from Argentina wins US Open 2007 golf championship.
Some have called the beast known as Oakmont Country Club hellish, even devilish.
Angel Cabrera, the first South American to ever get his name engraved on the U.S. Open trophy. The 37-year-old from Cordoba, Argentina, who took up the game at 15 at the urging of fellow countryman Eduardo Romero, managed to not only survive the 7,230-yard, par-70 layout, but also fended off two of the world's best players to register a one-stroke victory.
Cabrera's final-round 69 was good enough to hold off World No. 1 Tiger Woods and No. 3-ranked Jim Furyk. His second 1-under round of the championship - he opened with 69 on Thursday - gave him a 72-hole total of 5-over 285, the same winning score Australia's Geoff Ogilvy posted a year ago at Winged Foot. It's also the first time Cabrera, a three-time champion on the European Tour, has ever won in the U.S., and he's the third consecutive U.S. Open champion who hails from a country south of the Equator. New Zealand's Michael Campbell took the title in 2005 at Pinehurst and South Africa's Retief Goosen won in 2004 at Shinnecock Hills.
"I feel great," said Cabrera. "It's a great moment for me. I can't believe it."
Justine Henin is the US Open 2007 champion
Belgian Justine Henin claimed her seventh Grand Slam title with a 6-1 6-3 victory over former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia at the US Open.
Top-seeded Henin opened the match with a break, and added two more to take the first set. Fourth-seeded Kuznetsova didn’t use her opportunities, and that’s a must if you want to defeat a number one. For example, Kuznetsova wasn’t able to break Henin even in the games in which the Belgian double-faulted two times.
Another fact that shows Henin's dominance is that she won the US Open 2007 without losing a set.
