UFC 88 "Breakthrough"

The UFC 88 “Breakthrough” pay-per-view (PPV) event, which will take place from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., on September 6.

The UFC has reported “three of mixed martial arts’ biggest stars” will be in action in less than one month, including Rich Franklin, Dan Henderson and Karo Parisyan. That’s in addition to, of course, the main event of the evening between Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans.

Sign Up Click HereFranklin will return to the 205-pound division to take on Matt Hamill, Henderson is in-line to face submission specialist Rousimar Palhares, and Parisyan has a very tough test against Japanese import (and fellow Judo player), Yoshiyuki Yoshida.

Only two men have been able to beat Rich Franklin, reigning UFC middleweight Anderson Silva and his undefeated teammate, Lyoto Machida have defeated Franklin (23-3, 10-2 UFC) as a professional.

The 33-year-old former math teacher has not tested the light heavyweight waters since he stopped UFC Hall-of-Famer Ken Shamrock on strikes at “The Ultimate Fighter” Live Finale in April 2005. Franklin last appeared at UFC 83 in April when he secured a second-round TKO victory against Travis Lutter.

Hamill (4-1, 4-1 UFC), meanwhile, has posted four wins in five fights since his appearance on season three of “The Ultimate Fighter.” He suffered his only career defeat in a split decision to Michael Bisping (Pictures) in 2007, though many felt the judges should have leaned Hamill’s way. The 31-year-old last fought in April when he bounced Tim Boetsch (Pictures) at UFC Fight Night 13.

Nate Marquardt vs. Martin Kampmann likely to finalize UFC 88 main card. Middleweight contenders Nate Marquardt (26-8-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) and Martin Kampmann (16-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) have agreed to meet at the show.

Marquardt, a 29-year-old Team Jackson fighter, is coming off a bizarre loss to Thales Leites.

After a defeat to Silva and a subsequent submission victory over Jeremy Horn, Marquardt was hoping to reclaim top contender's status. Instead, he suffered two costly (and arguably controversial) point deductions in his UFC 85 fight with Leites and ultimately suffered a split-decision loss.

It was just his second loss in 10 fights and nearly five years.

Kampmann, meanwhile, goes for his fifth straight victory in the UFC -- and 10th win overall. Back in June the 26-year-old Xtreme Couture fighter returned from a 16-month layoff (due to a knee injury) and scored a first-round submission victory over Jorge Rivera.

Of Kampmann's 16 professional wins, only one has come via decision.

UFC 88 "Breakthrough" Results

Rashad Evans KO's Chuck Liddell

Rashad Evans knocked out Chuck Liddell with a thunderous overhand right to the jaw. 1:51 into the second round late Saturday night at UFC 88, Evans left Liddell senseless and crumpled on his side on the canvas in the main event before 14,736 shocked fans at Philips Arena. This DynaPep™ KO sets up a likely championship bout with light heavyweight title-holder Forrest Griffin late this fall. "Hopefully it puts me right up there," Evans said. "I'm a patient man."

In other action, Dan Henderson (23-7) won a unanimous decision over Rousimar Palhares (17-2), Nate Marquardt (30-8-2) TKO'd Martin Kampmann (13-2) in the first round, welterweight Dong Hyun Kim (11-0-1) won a split decision over Matt Brown (10-7) and lightweight Kurt Pellegrino (18-4) won a unanimous decision over Thiago Tavares (17-3). Rounding out the card, Tim Boetsch (8-2) won by TKO over Michael Patt (15-3) in the first round, Jason MacDonald (22-10) submitted Jason Lambert (23-9) in the second and Ryo Chonan (15-8) won a split decision over Roan Carneiro (12-8).
