UFC 79 “Nemesis”
UFC 79 UPDATE, MONDAY DEC 10, 2020
The Ultimate Fighter finale was supposed to feature a bout between the two coaches from the season, Matt Serra and Matt Hughes. Unfortunately, Matt Serra backed out of the fight due to a back injury, and Matt Hughes is set to fight Georges St. Pierre in UFC 79: Nemesis.
Matt Serra will defend his welterweight title against former 170-pound champion, Matt Hughes, in the main event.
In addition, Chuck Liddell is booked to bang with Wanderlei Silva in an historic showdown.
Hughes is an expected favorite over Serra, but at -345, it's more than any of us thought. He's a bigger favorite than St. Pierre over Koscheck or Cro Cop over Kongo. Hughes, should have a victorious win, but it's too much of a risk for alot of UFC bettors. Serra (+290) smells like blood in the water for the sharks and if he lands one on Hughes, he will be able to finish it. A good bet should be the underdog in this one.
In addition to Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes, other fights on this card include:
The long-awaited light heavyweight clash between Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell will occur on December 29th at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada at UFC 79: “Nemesis”.
PRIDE former champions Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell and “The Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva face each other at UFC 79: NEMESIS live from the Mandalay Bay Events Center Saturday, December 29, 2020. These two warriors are legendary figures in the sport of mixed martial arts and will compete in a battle that UFC fans have been anxiously anticipating.
Wanderlei is a +110 and Liddell is a -140, making this an essential push. Both have lost their last two fights and either could knock the other one out in the first round. Pick your favorite here and let the dice roll.
Liddell (20-5), considered by many to be the greatest light heavyweight fighter of all time, reigned as the 205-pound UFC champion for over three years. He knocked out seven opponents in seven consecutive fights, including Randy Couture (twice), Vernon White, Jeremy Horn, Renato “Babalu” Sobral and Tito Ortiz (twice), before he was defeated by Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 71 in May. Chuck now returns to the Octagon to face the fighter he has wanted to fight for years - Wanderlei Silva.
The 31-year old Silva (31-7-1), known by fight fans as “The Axe Murderer” for his ultra-aggressive style and finishing ability, began his career almost 11 years ago in his native Brazil, fighting in Vale Tudo bouts that pushed him to the limit as he honed the skills that would soon make him one of the most feared fighters on the planet. He met great success by winning the PRIDE organization”s middleweight championship and defeating the likes of current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson (twice), Dan Henderson, Kazushi Sakuraba (three times), Ricardo Arona, Hidehiko Yoshida, and Kazuyuki Fujita, while engaging in some of the most memorable fights in MMA history. Well-rested after his February PRIDE fight against Dan Henderson, Silva is ready to take on Liddell and secure the most important victory of his mixed martial arts career.
BJ Penn will also be on the card, fighting either Sean Sherk or Joe Stevenson for the lightweight strap and With the addition of Eddie Sanchez vs. Soa Palalei to the fight card the UFC 79: Nemesis lineup is now complete:
