Jermain Taylor vs. Jeff Lacy
Former super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy was rocked several times and struggled to win a majority-decision over Epifanio Mendoza on Wednesday, but the win has now placed him on route to a showdown with former 2000 Olympic teammate Jermain Taylor.
Lacy's last four fights, I can't see anything less than a Taylor domination, either a knockout or a very wide decision. Jermain is a big step up from the likes of Epi Mendoza, Peter Manfredo and Vitali Tsypko (and I know Lacy was hampered with an injury during the Tsypko fight).
Taylor (27-2-1, 17 KO's) became the undisputed and undefeated middleweight champion of the world on July 16, 2020 when he beat Bernard Hopkins at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Taylor defended his championship four times, including a Hopkins rematch (December 3, 2020), and was undefeated in his first 27 professional fights before back-to-back losses to present champ Kelly Pavlik.
After going undefeated through his first twenty one fights, Lacy had his Super Middleweight Championship taken from him by current Undefeated World Light Heavyweight Champion Joe Calzaghe on March 4, 2020 in Calzaghe's back-yard in the United Kingdom. Since then St. Petersburg, Florida's Lacy (24-1, 17 KO's) has reeled off three straight decision victories.
These two have some experience with each other. Word on the street was that Taylor used to box Lacy's ears off in sparring. When one considers Taylor's size and reach, and the fact that he now may be significantly more powerful at 168lbs, Lacy may be in for a very long night.
Taylor vs. Lacy Results
Jamain Taylor won by unanimous decision. Taylor, the former undisputed middleweight champion who had lost his last two fights and hadn't fought in nearly nine months, came out swinging Saturday night in a fight titled "All or Nothing."
Taylor (28-2-1, 17 KOs) nailed the "All" part of it as he punished his longtime friend and former Olympic teammate Jeff Lacy for 12 rounds.
Taylor landed nearly half of the 442 punches he threw, including a steady stream of powerful left jabs in winning nearly every round of the super middleweight eliminator at Memorial Gymnasium at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Lacy threw nearly the same amount of punches but landed only 17% of them.
"I knew coming into this fight I had to win and look good winning," said Taylor, who had lost two consecutive middleweight title fights to Kelly Pavlik. "I feel good about my performance, having not fought since February.
"My jab was working real good tonight. I should've used it more, but that was part of the game plan, keep the jab in his face all night and follow with the right."
Taylor was never in trouble during the fight, even during the controversial fifth round when a right hand from Lacy glanced off Taylor's shoulder and landed on the back of his head.
Taylor went down, but it appeared to be more of a slip, and the referee agreed, ruling that it was not a knockdown.
Lacy (23-2, 17 KOs) wasn't happy but did not argue the call.
