Oscar De La Hoya Vs. Manny Pacquiao
The Manny Pacquiao vs Oscar De La Hoya (Pacquiao vs De La Hoya) fight has been on serious highlights lately. Now, the heat is On! The Pacquiao vs De La Hoya match will be on December 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Both parties confirmed that the said fight will be a 12-rounder, non-title match at 147-pound welterweight category. The camps of Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya came through a series of negotiations to come up to a final decision for this fight.
Granted Pac Man usually blows up after the weigh-in and goes into the ring re-hydrated in the 140-145 range. But given his height and frame, I don’t think he can get much heavier than that, and I don’t think he’ll want to. I imagine that he’ll weigh in somewhere around 145 and be the same weight on fight night. Meanwhile, Oscar practically will have to kill himself to make 147. When he re-hydrates, he could go into that ring as heavy as 160.
Many in the boxing press have criticized the fight, and have claimed that Oscar is simply selling out and taking the path of least resistance to add more millions to his already morbidly obese bank account. They perceive the proposed fight to be a mismatch primarily because Pacquiao is a much smaller man who has never officially weighed more than 135 pounds for a fight. On the other hand, they tell you that since Oscar has fought a couple of times as high as 160 pounds, that he will win easily.
Manny Pacquiao, on the other hand, is the epitome of what it means to be a fighter. I call him the 'Little Filipino Spitfire' and he reminds me of mad hornet because of the way he zigs and zags and swoops in to sting his opponents. I've been watching this game they call boxing for 30 years and he is one of the special ones. One of the gifted ones.
When I think of this fight, of Pacquiao moving up to fight a bigger man and having the guts to take the shot, I think of Henry Armstrong - still the only fighter in boxing history to simultaneously hold world championships in three weight divisions at 126, 135 and 147 pounds. Armstrong routinely fought (and beat) much larger men that greatly outweighed him. If 'Homicide Hank' did that - Pacquiao can do this.
The monumental “The Dream Match” between the Filipino boxing icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and “The Golden Boy” Oscar de la Hoya. Pacquiao is the pound-for-pound champion right now, and yes he’s a mega-star around the world so he ups the PPV projections considerably.
Oscar De La Hoya Vs. Manny Pacquiao is scheduled to happen December 6th 2008 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Nevada. The fight will be at the welterweight limit of 147 lbs. This boxing match is going to put one of the best young talents in the sport (Manny Pacquiao) the rising filipino star.
