In 2010, Farmers Insurance came on board as sponsor, It would have been called the San Diego Open had a title sponsor not been found. The tournament, which has a $5.3 million purse, was won last year by Nick Watney.

2010 Farmers Insurance Results
SAN DIEGO — Ben Crane is patient. He is, after all, well known in golf circles for, to be kind, his very deliberate pace of play. So it comes as no surprise that through 98 winlessp PGA Tourp events and a drought of nearly five years, he methodically kept plugging away and never lost faith.
His wait lasted 18 more holes Sunday and one final 2-foot putt.
With a 2-under-par 70 on the demanding South Course overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Crane finished at 13-under 275 to win the Farmers Insurance Open by one stroke over Brandt Snedeker, Michael Sim and Marc Leishman. Breaking from the pack with birdie putts of 2, 22, 46 and 48 feet in his first 11 holes, then holding on after missing two short par putts in his last six holes, Crane earned his third PGA Tour win.

Watney wins Buick Invitational 2009
Nick Watney won the Buick Open Invitational when he was three shots behind with five holes to play.
First came a mini-collapse by John Rollins, a combination of bad swings and bad breaks.
Then it was a 40-foot birdie putt across the 16th green by Watney, who remembered the severity of the slope at the back of the green from when he three-putted at the U.S. Open last summer at Torrey Pines.
Watney never took the lead until the final shot of the tournament, a 2½-foot birdie putt to complete a five-shot comeback for his second career victory.
Watney, who appeared to be along for the ride for most of the final round, birdied two of his last three holes and didn't drop a shot over the final 11 holes in closing with a 4-under 68 for a one-shot victory.

Tiger Woods joined some elite company Sunday Jan 27, even though he might as well have been playing alone.
He thrilled the gallery with an improbable flop shot from the muck of trampled grass behind the ninth green to save par. He sent Torrey Pines into delirium with a 60-foot birdie putt that started in one direction and slid into the cup from the other. He made three consecutive bogeys on the back nine, a rarity for him when he's in the lead.
Woods finished at 19-under 269 to win the Buick Invitational for the fourth consecutive year. Woods is the only player to own such a streak at two events, having also won four in a row at Bay Hill. |
