AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND
The Open Championship, known to North Americans as the British Open, is one of the biggest golf tournaments of the year. The Open never fails to deliver huge golf betting excitement and always generates a lot of sports betting action. The Open is one of the ‘big four’ Grand Slam events which also include the Masters, The US Open and the US PGA.
British Open golf betting has become increasingly popular in recent years following a trend that has seen the whole sport of golf enjoy a greater profile, largely due the growth in television coverage over the last couple of decades.
The 138th British Open Golf 2009, July 16-19, Turnberry, Scotland.
The British Open, or more correctly – the Open Championship – returns to the fabled links of the Ailsa Course at
the Westin Turnberry Resort July 16 - 19, 2009. This will be the fourth time that the Open has been played over the
Ailsa Course at Turnberry with previous winners there being Tom Watson, Greg Norman and Nick Price.
There has been many mighty battles held at the Turnberry golf course, there was none better than the 'duel in the sun'
played here at Turnberry's inaugural Open in 1977, between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. That was settled by a
single shot, Watson 65-65, Nicklaus 65-66. The Open was last played here in 1994 and was won by Nick Price from Zimbabwe.
Reigning Champion Padraig Harrington will be looking to equal the record of the great Australian Peter Thompson,
by winning the Claret Jug for the third consecutive time. He is the first European to win back-to-back Championships
since James Braid way back in 1906.
Tiger Woods is also anticipated on the green at the 2009 British Open Golf Tournament, seeking to claim a third Open
Golf Championship victory.
The British Open, known officially as simply “the Open Championship”, is one of the four “major” annual golf tournaments.
It is also the oldest of the majors and the only to be held outside the United States. The location of the British Open
rotates each year among 9 courses in the United Kingdom. The Open is the third major played in the golf season and is
held the weekend of the third Friday in July. The British Open was first held in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club and is
one of the most revered traditions in all of sports.
The winner of the British Open receives a generous prize of more than $8 million and receives the coveted Golf Champion Trophy,
also known as the Claret Jug, awarded since 1873.
The Claret Jug is without doubt the most famous trophy in the game of golf. Commissioned in 1872 but completed
in 1873, this elegant trophy – officially called the Golf Champion Trophy – was first presented to Tom Kidd,
the 1873 champion, but Kidd was not the first name to be inscribed on it. That honour went to Young Tom Morris,
the 1872 champion, even though the trophy had not been completed when he won the event.

2009 British Open Results
Stewart Cink is the new Open champion, snatching the title from the hands of Tom Watson in a four-hole play off after they tied on a two-under-par total of 278.
Watson, who had turned the clock back all week, ran out of time in his bid to win his sixth Open over the same course where he won his second in 1977. The dream ended in anti-climatic fashion as the 59-year-old five-time champion wearied over the extra holes and destroyed his chances when he took two shots to force himself clear of the thick rough to the left of the 17th fairway. As they walked off that green he trailed 36-year-old Cink by four shots.
The final hole was a formality. Watson blocked his tee shot into the crowd and was in rough short of the green in two. Cink hit two perfect shots to less then three feet and tapped in the winning putt. Watson, sadly, trailed by six shots.
