2008 NFL Preseason “Quick Analysis”
NFC San Francisco 49ers
Location: San Francisco, California
Stadium: Monster Park “Candlestick Park”
Coach: Mike Nolan
NFL Championships: Super Bowl XVI (1981), Super Bowl XIX (1984), Super Bowl XXIII (1988), Super Bowl XXIV (1989) & Super Bowl XXIX (1994)
This season head coach Mike Nolan has brought in Mike Martz to recreate the explosive offenses his teams have been known for. Last season San Francisco had the worst offense in the league by far.
With weapons like running back Frank Gore and tight end Vernon Davis the 49ers are not without talent. This needs to be the season Alex Smith makes the jump to a serviceable quarterback. He gets a little short term help with Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson coming in as the new on and two receivers. There are still questions about the line though, so Smith might not get the time to exploit the talented cast around him.
The defense is probably not as bad as last years squad looked. With an offense incapable of keeping it off the field, the defense spent most of the game on the field. The signing of Justin Smith should help considerably either way. At the very least it will give season tickets something to watch as the team struggles to score.
Some San Francisco 49ers history: Few NFL teams can boast the individual stars and strong teams that made the 49ers a dominant power in the 1980s and 1990s. While on their way to capturing five Super Bowl titles, the 49ers fielded such players as running back Roger Craig, wide receiver Jerry Rice, defensive end Fred Dean, and quarterbacks Joe Montana and Steve Young. Earlier stars include Hall of Fame members quarterback Y. A. Tittle, and running backs Joe "The Jet" Perry and Hugh McElhenny.
