2008 NFL Preseason “Quick Analysis”
NFC New York Giants
Location: East Rutherford, New Jersey
Stadium: Giants Stadium
Coach: Tom Coughlin
NFL Championships: 1927, 1934, 1938, 1956, 1986, 1990
It must be odd to have won the Super Bowl and come back to not even be the run away favorite in your own division. Such is life for the New York Giants. Last season’s Cinderella story, the defending Super Bowl Champions have returned pumped and ready for another bruising season in the NFC East. Eli Manning is now NYC’s favorite son, and will be exciting to watch this year.
The team already had to deal with the Cowboys continued rise to prominence, but with Michael Strahan's retirement and tension between tight end Jeremy Shockey, wide receiver Plaxico Burress and the general manager Jerry Reese. Fans might have season tickets to the greatest implosion in football history this season.
The defense will return with Justin Tuck to replace Strahan and Mathais Kiwanuka expected to be used in various positions around the front seven. Hopefully the Giants defense will play like it did in the playoffs, otherwise the season will be long.
Eli Manning needs to prove that the jump he made in the playoffs was not just a four game mirage. There is also a potential mess in the backfield with Brandon Jacobs projected to start after taking over for an injured Derrick Ward. Ward may feel slighted and become a huge distraction. The Giants, like every other competitive team, needs two good running backs, but it always to keep players happy who feel they should be starting.
New York Giants History
In 1925 New York City sports enthusiast Tim Mara paid $500 for an NFL franchise, which he named the Giants. The team played its home games at the Polo Grounds, which was also the home of the baseball Giants. Legendary halfback Jim Thorpe was recruited to join the team, which earned its first league title in 1927 under head coach Earl Potteiger. The Giants shut out 9 of 12 opponents and surrendered only 20 points during the entire season.
