2008 NFL Preseason “Quick Analysis”
AFC New England Patriots
Location: Foxborough, Massachusetts
Stadium: Gillette Stadium
Coach: Bill Belichick
NFL Championships: Super Bowl XXXVI (2001), Super Bowl XXXVIII (2003) & Super Bowl XXXIX (2004)
The Patriot roster reads like a who’s who of the NFL Hall of Fame in 15 years. Tom Brady continues to provide a mystique and a calm presence that has bolstered the Patriot’s legitimate claim at a dynasty.
The 2007 New England Patriots dominated the regular season schedule, but struggled a bit in the playoffs leading up to the Super Bowl as teams exposed their weaknesses, their secondary and their offensive line.
The 2008 New England Patriots will still loose their first round pick and being forced to trade for one, the team did little to help. Corner back Terrance Wheatley is not a bad pick up at the end of the second round, but the woes in the middle of the field continue.
The linebackers that took the brunt of the criticism for their age are back. Fernando Bryant has been signed to replace Asante Samuel, but as good as Bryant is, he is not Samuel.
Brady-to-Moss is still going to terrify opposing defensive coordinators and Tight end Benjamin Watson is returning from surgery, but he should be able to return to his usual productive self as Wes Walker goes over the middle and drags the defense with him on his underneath routes.
Laurence Maroney proved he could be counted on in the playoffs, but the offensive line needs to heal and gel for him to carry his performance into the 2008 schedule.
Some New England Patriots history: The Boston Patriots joined the American Football League (AFL) as a charter member in 1960. In its second season the team compiled a winning record. Eleven Patriots played in the 1963 AFL All-Star Game as head coach Mike Holovak steered Boston to a tie for the Eastern Division title.
