2008 NFL Preseason “Quick Analysis”
NFC Minnesota Vikings
Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Stadium: Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome
Coach: Brad Childress
NFL Championships: 0
The Vikings are a throwback team, with an intense focus on the run. And by “on the run” we mean mostly “on Adrian Peterson”, who earned his Rookie of the Year title by shredding opposing defenses.
The Vikings may have closed out the 2007 season with an 8-8 record, but the team is set for the future. Adrian Peterson dominated when he was not injured. He is set to be an All-Pro running back for some time with his mix of strength and speed.
Tarvaris Jackson made strides and took steps back all season long, but he appears to have found a favorite target in Bernard Berrian. A second receiver still needs to emerge for the offense to be unstoppable, and Sidney Rice and Robert Ferguson are not going to get it done. The line is solid and will make plenty of holes for Peterson to run through. The Vikings are a few pieces away from being a playoff team on offense.
The defense only became scarier with the addition of Jared Allen to Kevin Williams and Pat Williams. The linebackers could be better, but he secondary will only be as good as Darren Sharper and Antoine Winfield. Vikings games will be entertaining if not just to get tickets to see the team develop.
Some Minnesota Vikings history: The Vikings joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1961 and selected Fran Tarkenton in the NFL draft. The franchise got off to a slow start, producing only one winning record in its first seven seasons. In 1967 Minnesota traded Tarkenton to the New York Giants.
