2008 NFL Preseason “Quick Analysis”
AFC
Houston Texans

Location: Houston, Texas
Stadium: Reliant Stadium
Coach: Gary Kubiak
NFL Championships:  None

Neither quarterback really stood out and none of the running backs dominated, and yet Houston scored 379 points over the season and Andre Johnson had a respectable season with touchdown catches.

Ahman Green returns to the backfield, but needs the offensive line to do a little blocking so he can be effective. The new zone-blocking scheme from Alex Gibbs will go a long way to help the team be competitive.

The defense needs to improve. The secondary actually looked pretty good last season, with the corners developing into standout performers, but the defensive line needs to get better and get more pressure on the quarterback before any of that can seen by the pedestrian fan.

Some Houston Texans history: The Houston Oilers were entrenched as an NFL franchise, playing their games in the Houston Astrodome, until ownership decided in 1997 that Tennessee was a more suitable venue for football. The NFL accepted Houston's proposal for an expansion team after a competing bid from Los Angeles, California, fell apart in 1999. The Texans are owned by businessman Robert McNair, and the general manager is Charley Casserly. The franchise selected its team name in September 2000. In early 2001 Houston hired Dom Capers, former defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, as its first head coach. Capers was also the first head coach of the Carolina Panthers, who joined the NFL in 1995.
