2005 World Series Betting Odds - Bet Chicago white
Sox Vs. Houston Astros
Beating
the Los Angeles Angels in the ALCS, the Sox and White
Sox fans will begin to start thinking about their next
World Series opponent, which will be the Houston Astros.
The Astros defeated the St. Louis Cardnals 4 games to 2
to win the NLCS division. A team that hasn't won a World
Series in 88 years, and one that has never triumphed in
baseball's fall classic, will begin trying to end their
curses Saturday night.
So the Chicago White Sox are back in the World Series
for the first time since 1917. Now, of course, the
objective is to win the World Series for the first time
since the Wilson Administration. Chicago White Sox fans
have not seen their Sox win a pennant since 1959 or play
in a World Series since 1917. The Sox went 23-19 this
year and i believe have a good chance of being the next
World Series Champions.
The annual seven-game series will open at U.S. Cellular
Field in Chicago Saturday evening. The Sox will enjoy
the home-field advantage because the American League
team won the All-Star Game this past summer at the
Detroit Tigers' Comerica Park. That means that if the
series goes seven games, four will be played in Chicago.
The White Sox opened a minus-120 favorite Thursday at
Skytowercasino.com to win the best-of-seven World
Series, meaning bettors risk $1.20 for each $1 they're
trying to win on Chicago. The Houston Astros opened at
even money.
In Game 1 Saturday, Contreras and the White Sox are
favored by minus-135 against Clemens and the Astros. The
over/under in Game 1 is listed at 7 or 7 1/2 runs in Las
Vegas, an indication that oddsmakers expect a
low-scoring World Series.
President George W. Bush will open the 2005 World Series
in Chicago by throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.
President Bush works has been working on his delivery,
in anticipation of his Game 1 start. "My fellow
Americans, I am proud to announce to you that, as your
president, I will put my reputation and my arm on the
line for Game 1
of the World Series," Bush said in a televised press
conference this morning. "I have heard people say that I
cannot do this at my age, or that the president's job is
not to pitch in the World Series, or even that they
don't think I still have my high heat. My friends,
I aim to prove them all wrong this Saturday in Chicago."
White House officials say that Bush has been preparing
for his Game 1 start by working out with Secret Service
agents, as well as with pitching coaches from the
Minnesota Twins and St. Louis Cardinals, who are
familiar with the batters from Chicago and Houston.
Security at U. S. Cellular Field has been beefed up in
anticipation of Bush's major-league pitching debut, and
many other preparations have been made for the historic
occasion.
Despite the promise of fair play, odds-makers readjusted
the betting line for the World Series opener upon
hearing the president's announcement. The new odds are
seven to two in favor of the Houston Astros, Bush's
hometown team, with a nine-run point spread.
World Series Betting and Handicapping Tips
The listless Houston offense also plays to Chicago's
strengths. Like the Angels (whom the White Sox held to
only 11 runs in five games in the ALCS), the Astros have
little power, don't strike out much and hit the ball in
the air quite often. The White Sox, of course, have a
tremendous defensive outfield unit, and that means Aaron
Rowand, Scott Podsednik and Jermaine Dye would be
hawking down lots of fly balls when they oppose Houston
in the World Series. In order to score runs, the Astros,
who do a good job of putting the ball in play, need a
weak defense in the field.
That's certainly not Chicago, according to Baseball
Prospectus defensive efficiency ratings, which track how
often a defense converts a ball in play into an out, the
White Sox have the second-best team defense in all of
baseball.
There's also playing environment to be considered. The
Sox have a lineup that skews heavily right-handed (among
regulars, only Podsednik and catcher A.J. Pierzynski bat
from the left side), and Minute Maid Park - the
hypothetical location for games three, four and five of
the World Series is a great environment for right-handed
batters, particularly for those with power. In the White
Sox's case, 161 of their 200 homers this season averaged
80.5 percent, were courtesy of players batting from the
right side. Guys like Paul Konerko, Tadahito Iguchi, Joe
Crede, Juan Uribe and Dye might find the Juice Box to be
a park well suited to their skills.
