Event: UFC 99: The Comeback
Date: June 13, 2009
Venue: Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany
Broadcast: Pay-Per-View via Tape Delay
The main event will feature a unique 195-pound catchweight bout between former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin and former Pride 205-pound champion Wanderlei Silva, during the UFC's first-ever trip to Germany on June 13th 2009.
Both fighters are absolute giants in the world of mixed martial arts and have done a lot to get the sport mainstream acceptance: the match promises to be incredibly exciting! Having a master’s degree in education under his belt, Rich Franklin is a former UFC middleweight champion. Franklin is the co-founder of the Keep it in the Ring foundation which aims to enhance character building in youth. Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva, on the other hand, has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He is known for his extreme aggressiveness during fights and most of his fights have to be stopped by the referee!
Franklin lost his last match to Dan Henderson in the 205 pound division whereas Silva was unsuccessful against Quinton Jackson in the same weight category! Judging by this record, anything is likely to happen during the upcoming bout which is going to be utterly breathtaking! It has been confirmed that Wanderlei Silva, who currently weighs 208 pounds, will move down to 195 pounds for the showdown.
Undefeated heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez (5-0), will take on mixed martial arts veteran Heath Herring (28-14).
Fighting out of the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California, Velasquez has won all three of his UFC bouts, defeating Brad Morris, Jake O’Brien, and Denis Stojnic.
Herring (28-14-1), a PRIDE veteran, has gone just 2-3 since debuting with the UFC in early-2007, but has faced particularly difficult competition in his three most-recent fights and it won’t get any easier with Velasquez up next. “The Texas Crazy Horse” followed up a debut loss to Jake O’Brien with a unanimous decision win over Brad Imes. After losing to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Herring bounced back with a split decision victory over heavyweight contender Cheick Kongo. Most-recently, Herring was on the losing end of a dominant unainmous decision against Brock Lesnar in August.
