Sign Up Click HereA championship battle of undefeated light heavyweights is slated to headline UFC 98 on May 23. Rashad Evans (13-0-1) will defend his UFC belt May 23 against Lyoto Machida (14-0). Evans-Machida is the third planned main event for the MGM Grand Garden Arena-hosted card in Las Vegas. Other matches of note include Matt Hughes vs Matt Serra in a Welterweight title, as well as Sean Sherk vs Frankie Edgar in the Lightweight division.

Rashad Evans vs. Lyoto Machida

Rashad Evans will put his newly won belt on the line for the first time. Fighting out of Jackson Submission Wrestling, Rashad specializes in Kickboxing and Wrestling, very different from the Black House fighter Machida, who is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and practices Shotokan Karate.

Light heavy-weight champion Rashad Evans has shown tremendous improvement in his stand up, finishing four of his last six fights via TKO or KO. In his championship title match against former light heavy-weight champion Forrest Griffin, Rashad displayed his ground and pound, which put Forrest away with brutal blows to the head and face.

There is no question that Machida is an extremely talented fighter who will likely hold the light heavyweight title one day - however, he is going up against a very talented opponent who has beaten some of the biggest names in the division.

Machida has shown that he is comfortable on the ground or standing up, where he normally forces his opponents to follow his game and attacks them off guard. Although the majority if Machida’s fights have gone the distance and came down to judges decision, he has showed great improvement in his stand up and his ability to capitalize on any given opportunity, as he demonstrated in his match-up against Thiago Silva.
Machida has only ever lost ONE round on ONE judges' score card during his entire career.

ufc fighter Rashad "Sugar" Evans, on the other hand, has beaten names such as Forrest Griffin, Chuck Liddell and Michael Bisping. His lone "blemish" was a draw to Tito Ortiz at
UFC 73. One thing is for sure, either “Sugar” Rashad “Sugar” Evans or Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida will walk away with the first loss of his MMA career.

Matt Hughes Vs. Matt Serra

The Matt Hughes and Matt Serra fight was originally supposed to happen at UFC 79 back in December of 2007, but an injury to Serra injured his back and he was forced to withdraw from the bout.

Hughes went on to face Georges St. Pierre for a third time and was soundly defeated for a second time by the current UFC welterweight champion. There was a ton of heat between Hughes and Serra and the UFC capitalized by casting them as opposing coaches on the sixth installment of The Ultimate Fighter.

The grudge match was further delayed after Hughes suffered a knee injury during a loss to Thiago Alves at UFC 85 in June of last year. Hughes was able to heal his injury but the bout was delayed yet again this time due to the birth of Serra’s first child this past February.
With both fighters healthy and while neither Hughes nor Serra is at the top of his game anymore, this is a fight that fans have wanted to see for a very long time.
