SILVA vs. COTE live from Allstate Arena on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008.
UFC 90 is coming to town and it is bringing the world's greatest pound for pound fighter, Anderson "The Spider" Silva, for a middleweight title fight against his number one contender, Patrick "The Predator" Cote. Silva was originally supposed to face off against Yushin Okami but Okami broke his hand in training and Cote has been moved up into his spot. also a pivotal welterweight showdown between Diego Sanchez and Thiago Alves.
Anderson Silva once again showed why he’s the greatest pound for pound fighter in the world when he moved up to light heavyweight and destroyed James "The Sandman" Irvin. Now he drops back down to middleweight to defend his world title against Patrick Cote, a fighter on a four-fight win streak with a style that guarantees an incredible fight, wherever it goes. There is no better way to introduce Chicago to the UFC than with the championship fight Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote.
Cote (14-4) earned his title shot with a decision over Ricardo Almeida at UFC 86 on July 5. The 185-pounder from Montreal is riding a four-fight win streak in the UFC, with previous victories over Scott Smith, Kendall Grove and Drew McFedries.
Diego Sanchez vs. Thiago Alves
Thiago Alves (15-3) and Diego Sanchez (19-2) will throw leather, setting the stage for a blockbuster welterweight showdown that will more than likely determine the next number one title contender in the stacked division.
Alves is fresh of ridiculous performance against Matt Hughes, taking out the former champion in the second round of their main event tilt at UFC 85: “Bedlam” just last month. Prior to that, “The Pitbull” wiped out another perennial powerhouse, Karo Parisyan, at UFC Fight Night 13.
The 24-year-old Brazilian was already on the fast track to an eventual title shot. And a win over Sanchez would certainly put him over the top.
Hermes Franca vs. Marcus Aurelio
Also added to the UFC 90 card is a battle for Brazilian bragging rights when Fortaleza’s Hermes Franca takes on longtime friend Marcus Aurelio in a lightweight bout, and a clash of former Ultimate Fighter alumni between season two’s Josh Burkman and season four’s Pete Sell, who will be making his welterweight debut in the UFC’s initial foray into the Windy City.
A shoulder injury to Gleison Tibau has opened the door for a bout between longtime friends Marcus Aurelio and Hermes Franca at UFC 90 “Silva vs. Cote” on Oct. 25 at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. On the verge of becoming just another face in the UFC’s deep 155-pound division, Franca knows he has a difficult test ahead of him.
Hermes Franca (18-7) finds himself in need of a victory. The 34-year-old has followed an eight-fight winning streak with back-to-back decision losses to Sherk and Frankie Edgar. A year-long steroid suspension was sandwiched in between.
Aurelio (16-6), a decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who has never been finished, last competed in July when he dropped a unanimous decision to rising lightweight contender Tyson Griffin at UFC 86. The defeat snapped a two-fight winning streak for the 35-year-old, who holds notable victories against former Pride Fighting Championships lightweight titleholder Takanori Gomi, Cage Rage world featherweight champion Masakazu Imanari and veteran Rich Clementi.
The UFC will make its historic first trip to Chicago this fall when it presents UFC 90. The UFC had purposely avoided Chicago because until recently, the state did not regulate mixed martial arts. However, minor tweaks in the state law now gives the Illinois Athletic Commission the authority to sanction MMA events.
