WHO: 43 of NASCAR's fastest racers
WHAT: The Pepsi 500
WHEN: Sunday, Oct 11, 2009 at 8:15 PM ET
WHERE: Auto Club Speedway, Fontana, California
The Sharp Aquos 500 Sprint Cup series race has been renamed the Pepsi 500, but it still features all the heart-pounding betting action you've come to expect from a Nascar race.
The Pepsi 500 is quickly becoming a hottest race on the Sprint Cup schedule especially since it’s the fourth race in the Chase. It’s not just the Fontana sun that is blazing—these drivers are hyped up and honed in on winning valuable points. With a two mile track, these drivers push speeds of over 160 mph. The straightaways are fast, but the corners are pretty flat, so drivers struggle there to get their cars to handle.
California Speedway is located in Fontana CA and is a fairly new track. Building of the track started in 1995 and was completed in 1997. It was built on the former Kaiser Steel plant. California speedway is similar to Michigan International Speedway and considered to be its sister track.
The Auto Club Speedway is the premier destination for NASCAR and other top-tier motorsports events coming to Southern California. The track has four main options for different races, a standard D-oval mainly for NASCAR and Indy Car events, an interior small track, a motorcycle course and a sports car course.
2008 Pepsi 500 Winner
Reigning champion Jimmie Johnson is in a perfect spot to continue his success at Auto Club Speedway. With one victory and three top-three finishes here in his last three starts, Johnson captured the pole for Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series Pepsi 500.
Despite his recent success, Johnson has just two wins at this two-mile oval. But he put himself in good position to make it three, turning in a lap of 180.397 miles per hour in 39.912 seconds in a Chevrolet to claim the pole for the next-to-last race before the “Chase for the Championship” begins.
Other winners include fellow Californian and teammate in the NASCAR odds competition, Jimmie Johnson, Vancouver, WA native, Greg Biffle and Missouri-born Carl Edwards.
