Hopkins vs Enrique Ornelas
Bernard Hopkins vs. Enrique Ornelas
Wednesday, Dec 2 6:00pm
at Liacouras Center, Philadelphia, PA
After nearly a year, Bernard Hopkins is returning to the ring to fight Enrique Ornelas (29-5, 19KOs) and to top it off. Light heavyweight stars Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones struck an agreement late last month to meet in a rematch in the first quarter of 2010, part of the deal was that Jones be allowed to go through with an already agreed upon bout and that Hopkins could take an interim bout if he wanted. Jones and Hopkins both need to win their bouts to preserve their planned fight next year, a rematch of Jones' unanimous decision to win a vacant middleweight title 16 years ago and long before both became legends.
Hopkins (49-5-1, 32 KOs), boxing match with Ornelas (29-5, 19 KOs) will mark his homecoming. Hopkins hasn't fought in Philadelphia since defending the undisputed middleweight championship against Morrade Hakkar at the Spectrum in 2003.
Hopkins, who turns 45 in January, wanted the tune up before facing Jones because he hasn't fought since last October, when he easily outpointed middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik in a nontitle bout at 170 pounds. At 44, he remains one of the three or four finest pound-for-pound boxers in the world, a level of excellence that, on the face of it, should be inconceivable for someone who has made his living these past 21 years by swapping punches in the prize ring.
Ornelas, has fought as a middleweight and super middleweight, so he'll be moving up in weight to face Hopkins. Ornelas, 29, is 4-3 in his last seven bouts, but he's coming off a fourth-round knockout victory against Roberto Baro on July 30 and has faced some quality opponents, including former junior middleweight titlist Bronco McKart (twice), Sam Soliman and Marco Antonio Rubio.
Hopkins vs Ornelas Fight Results
At 44, Bernard Hopkins dominated enough to prove he has a few fights left in his celebrated career.
A rematch with Roy Jones Jr. probably isn't one of them.
Hopkins defeated Enrique Ornelas by unanimous decision in a light heavyweight bout, sweeping the scorecards to the delight of his hometown fans in his homecoming fight Wednesday night.
"This is what happens when you take care of your body when you're young in the brutal sport," Hopkins said. "I invested in myself like you invest in money in the bank."
Hopkins, one of the sport's all-time great middleweights, counted on depositing some major bucks in the bank after a proposed rematch with Jones in March in Las Vegas. But the long-awaited bout is unlikely to happen after Jones was stopped by Australian Danny Green in the first round on Wednesday.
