2008 NFL Preseason “Quick Analysis”
NFC Chicago Bears
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Stadium: Soldier Field
Coach: Lovie Smith
NFL Championships: Super Bowl XX (1985)
The Chicago Bears have been trying to bring the monsters of the midway back since the Bears won the Super Bowl in 1985. Chicago has seen itself as a football town, but have had long had a team to truly rally around.
Chicago was the dominant football franchise before the Super Bowl. The team won eight NFL Championships, including the original championship blowout in 1940 with a 73-0 victory over the Redskins.
The 2007 season was supposed to have the triumphant return of the Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, the schedule quickly became spotted by losses as Rex Grossman continued to struggle after his performance in the Super Bowl the season before.
The Bears lost their two starting receivers from last season and released Cedric Benson after his failure to produce on the field. Mart Booker and Brandon Llyod will be targets for whoever wins the quarterback battle, Matt Forte is expected to be the starter after being drafted in the second round, and Chris Williams will hope to make an immediate impact at left tackle. Devin Hester puts on a show almost every time he touchesthe ball, and Bears fans are hoping he touches the ball a lot this season.
Despite the season last year, the Bears defense is still projected to be one of the leagues best. The front office is hoping that the players will remember how to tackle again.
Some Chicago Bears history: Chicago has nine NFL titles, behind only the Green Bay Packers in overall league crowns. The Bears were the NFL's most dominant team during the 1930s and 1940s, earning six league titles. George Halas, a cofounder of the NFL, collected 324 career victories during his 30 seasons as Chicago's head coach. Chicago made eight trips to the playoffs from 1984 to 1994 and won the Super Bowl in 1986. Running back Walter Payton, the NFL's all-time leading rusher with 16,726 yards, produced ten 1,000-yard seasons in these 11 years.
