2008 NFL Preseason “Quick Analysis”
AFC Buffalo Bills
Location: Orchard Park, New York
Stadium: Ralph Wilson Stadium
Coach: Dick Juaron
NFL Championships: AFL Champions 1964 & 1965
If the NFL gave out Super Bowl trophies for sheer grit and persistence, the Bills would have been the 2007 NFL champion. While injuries cursed this team’s 2007 campaign, the 2008 Bills are defined by their new and emerging talent.
Last season the Buffalo Bills handed over the reigns of the offense to Trent Edwards. The quarterback beat out J.P. Losman over the of the season schedule, going 5-5. Bills fasn cannot be over impressed with his 70.4 QB rating his rookie year.
The offense hopes to be more potent this season as the new offensive coordinator, Steve Fairchild, will work to establish a tempo-ed attack with its focus on continuity. Lee Evans and Josh Reed need to live up to their potential and Marshawn Lynch needs to break a few more long runs before the fans can get excited.
The atrocious defense from last season will need new acquisitions defensive tackle Marcus Stroud and linebacker Kawika Mitchell to give the front seven some bight, or else quarterbacks will chew up rookie cornerback Leodis McKelvin. The Buffalo Bills schedule will have plenty of games for the young team to prove itself.
Some Buffalo Bills history: The Bills built powerful teams in both the now-defunct American Football League (AFL) and the NFL. The team won consecutive AFL titles in 1964 and 1965 with teams that starred running back Cookie Gilchrist and quarterback Jack Kemp. During the 1970s Bills running back O. J. Simpson became one of the most prolific rushers in professional football history, breaking nearly every NFL rushing record. Buffalo appeared in four consecutive Super Bowls from 1991 through 1994 with teams starring linebacker Cornelius Bennett, quarterback Jim Kelly, defensive end Bruce Smith, and running back Thurman Thomas.
