Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez
The Undisputed pound for pound Champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been out of proffessional boxing for exactly two years. He's trying to come back and enter the rings again Juan Manuel Marquez which is now by far the best Mexican fighter! The fight was first scheduled for July 18, 2009, but due to an rib injury Floyd Mayweather Jr. suffered during training he had to postpone the fight to rescheduled for September 19, 2009 and will be staged at MGM.
Mayweather officially ended his retirement on May 2 when he announced he would fight Marquez. They were scheduled to fight at a catch-weight of 144 pounds, more than Marquez has ever fought and the lightest weight for Mayweather since 2005.
Mayweather hasn't boxed since knocking out Ricky Hatton in December 2007. The former five-division champ was slated to fight a rematch with Oscar De La Hoya but instead abruptly retired last June, turning his attention to show business.
As of now, the plan is to reschedule the fight as soon as possible and not to cancel the fight entirely or to have either man move onto another opponent.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25 KOs) vs. Juan Manuel Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KOs)
The rumors had been buzzing the ears of fight fans that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is ready to return to the fight game. Whether it be for the love of the sport, or the fact that he can sniff a huge pay day in a fight with the current champion Pacquaio, one thing for sure is that this is hardly an easy tune up fight.
Mayweather, 32, will return to the ring July 18 in a fight against lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez, who will move up two weight classes to get his share of the riches a Mayweather fight can produce.
Marquez, who just last year weighed 129 pounds for a fight against Pacquiao and has only fought twice as a lightweight. Though moving up in weight, Marquez is still considered a dangerous opponent, and many thought he won both his fights against Pacquiao.
This will be Floyd Mayweather Jr. first fight since he stopped Ricky Hatton in the 10th round of their December 2007 bout.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. insists it's not all about the money. Not totally, anyway.
That was the question Mayweather asked himself as he took a break from the sport that has consumed his life from the time he learned to walk. He wasn't gone long, but his 11 month retirement was enough to make him realize that he wanted to fight -- and fight a lot more.
when Mayweather announced his retirement last June he was generally regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, an honor now mainly given Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather's decision to retire instead of fighting a rematch against Oscar De La Hoya led to Pacquiao getting the shot that he capitalized on. Now Floyd Mayweather Jr. wants to be known as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport once more.
This fight between them will be the trigerring device for the coming future Pacquiao vs Mayweather match, if Floyd Mayweather Jr. wins this July fight against the Juan Manuel Marquez, who also wants a 3rd chance to fight Pacquiao again for a title shot. One thing is for sure this Fight will bring Sparks in the ring and the winner will get his shot at Pacquiao.
Mayweather vs Juan Marquez Results
Mayweather put on a pure boxing clinic, pasting Juan Manuel Marquez in as comprehensive a performance as you will ever see in a unanimous decision victory before 13,116 (mostly Marquez fans on Mexican Independence Day weekend) on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
There wasn't one minute of true competition in the fight, as Mayweather simply ran roughshod over the smaller man.
"I've been off for two years so I felt like it took me a couple rounds to really know I was back in the ring again," he said. "And I know I'll get better."
That's the scary part. But the frustrating part was he missed a golden opportunity to close the show in style.
He left Marquez's face a swollen mess. Gave him a bloody nose, too. Oh, and he also deposited him on the canvas in the second round after landing a hybrid left hook/uppercut on Marquez's chin.
"I dropped him with a punch I don't think he saw and when he got back up, he kept on fighting," said Mayweather.
And Marquez said, "It was a very hard fight. He surprised me with the knockdown. He hurt me in that round, but not at any other time."
Yet for all of Mayweather's dominance, you never got the impression that he wanted to step on the gas and get Marquez out of there.
