Both Johnson & Dawson are coming off of an impressive string of victories and looking to bounce around with some of the division's top names. For young Chad, this is the opportunity of a lifetime: a chance to beat a top name and step further into the limelight for bigger challenges down the road. For Johnson, what could be better than defeating a young hungry lion and show the world that although at 39, he can fight like 29.
Dawson previously held the WBC title, defending it against Johnson the first time around, but vacated it to fight Tarver for the IBF and IBO straps last October. He has now given up the IBF title to fight Johnson again, but the IBO title is still in Dawson's possession.
Undefeated Chad Dawson (28-0, 17 KOs), will be putting his perfect record on the line. Hailing from New Haven, Conn., Dawson first won a world title in 2007, dominating then undefeated belt-holder Tomasz Adamek. Letter perfect in his pro career, Dawson has complied a string of title defenses and impressive victories including two unanimous decisions over former world champion Antonio Tarver. However, none of these were as competitive as a narrow victory over Glen Johnson in their first fight. Dawson looks to silence any doubters and prove once and for all that his perfect record is indicative of his place at the top of the sport.
Johnson (49-12-2, 33 KOs), from Miami, FL by way of Clarendon, Jamaica, is one of boxing’s most popular fighters. He captured the world light heavyweight title in 2004 winning a brilliant unanimous decision over future world champion Clinton Woods. His title reign included a knockout victory of Roy Jones, Jr. and 12-round decision over Tarver, which earned him the “Fighter of the Year” honor from the Boxing Writers Association of America. Johnson has won seven of his last nine bouts, five by knockout, with the only blemishes coming from close world title decisions to and Woods. He is currently world-rated in the Top-Five by all major sanctioning groups, including No. 2 by the WBC and No. 3 by the IBF. The Dawson rematch will be Johnson’s ninth world title fight.
