Australian Open History and Facts
Its venue has been at Melbourne Park since 1988 when not only the event was changed (previously based at Kooyong) but also the surface, hard courts replaced grass.
The Rod Laver Arena and The Vodafone Arena are the main two courts in the park and remain the only arenas with movable roof. This is a massive advantage as they can be closed when it rains or if it's extremely hot and with the tournament being held in the middle of Australian summer this is of massive benefit.

2010 Australian Open Winner
Roger Federer and Serena Williams validated their No. 1 seeds and rankings to claim Australian Open singles titles during the weekend in Melbourne.
For Federer, it was Australian Open title No. 4, and sweet 16 — to extend his record — in overall Grand Slams. Sweet because a year earlier Federer was in tears after a tough five-set loss to Rafael Nadal. Though this final, except for the tiebreaker, lacked the drama of a year ago, on Sunday it was Andy Murray whose voice was cracking after Federer's 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (13-11) victory.
Federer saved five set points and wasted two match points in the tiebreaker with some uncharacteristic shot selection before clinching it when Murray netted a backhand after 2 hours, 41 minutes.
"I'm over the moon winning this again. I think I played some of my best tennis in my life these last two weeks," Federer said.
On Saturday, Williams raised her total of Grand Slam singles titles to 12 — equaling Billie Jean King— and her Australian Open total to five (2003, '05, '07, '09-10). And it helps put the uproar from last year's U.S. Open deeper in the rearview mirror.
"I've totally moved on," said Williams, who was fined $92,000 in the aftermath of her profanity-laced tirade at a line judge during a semifinal loss to Kim Clijsters in New York last September. "One moment doesn't make one person's career. It's all about the moments you put together.
2009 Australian Open Winner
Rafael Nadal accepted his Australian Open trophy from the legendary Rod Laver on Sunday night – and is well on the way to becoming a giant of the game himself.
He won the Australian Open, becoming the first Spaniard to do so. He joined an elite group of just 12 men who have managed to win three Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces since the Open Era began.
Nadal had somehow conjured up the heart and the physical puff to go toe to toe with Federer for four hours and 23 minutes and then, with the clock standing at 12.14am, Nadal won 7-5 3-6 7-6(3) 3-6 6-2 and was crowned as the new king of Melbourne Park.
How he had managed to do it was beyond anyone's comprehension. Less than 48 hours earlier, he had staggered off court at well after 1am at the end of a five hour 14 minute epic with Fernando Verdasco. At the very same time, Federer had been sound asleep after getting an extra day off. Yet here was Nadal again, winning the battle of the muscles, the tactics and, most crucially of all, the nerves to beat Federer again, his 13th victory in 19 meetings and his fifth victory over the Swiss in seven meetings in Grand Slam finals.
2008 Australian open Grand Slam Tennis Winners
Novak Djokovic from Serbia, the 3rd ranked player in the world has toppled sentimental favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 4 sets to win his first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open at the age of 20.
Neither Sharapova, nor Ivanovic played great tennis, and at the end of the day it was the player that made the least unforced error who triumphed, and that was the fifth seed, Maria Sharapova. Maria Sharapova wins her third Grand Slam title, taking out Ana Ivanovic in the final of the Australian Open.
